Vallarta Supermarket plans to open a third store in Fresno, this one on the site of the former Mid-State Bowl at Clinton and Weber avenues in central Fresno, Fresno officials said Wednesday.

The Hispanic grocery store has signed a lease and will build a 45,000-square-foot store on the corner of the planned Mid State Shopping Center, said Terance Frazier, one of the owners of Noyan/Frazier Properties. The store is scheduled to open by the end of 2015 and will employ 200 people, according to the city.

The property has long been slated for development, but the recession and other factors slowed the process. Mid-State Bowl closed in 1990 and sat vacant for years before being demolished. Noyan/Frazier Properties bought the property from the city’s Redevelopment Agency (now called the Successor Agency) years ago and recently worked with Council Member Blong Xiong to bring in Vallarta.

Noyan/Frazier Properties also plans to bring in other businesses for the remaining 40,000 square feet of the shopping center.

Vallarta has two other stores in Fresno. The stores carry regular grocery items and foods favored by Hispanics, including tortillas and sweet breads that are made daily.
